COMPANIONSHIP
Companionship is a free flowing process using every opportunity to make the most of daily life; to find laughter and enjoyment; to encourage hobbies and activities; to discover new ways to engage the mind and body.
Clients in London are spoilt for choice with music, art clubs, museums and many weekly sessions ranging from singing to dances to swimming. Most things are possible! This time can also be used to do any shopping and accompany to any appointments.
Clients based in Hertfordshire are offered a chance to enjoy time within a safe rural setting. Being active can help reduce levels of frustration, unhappiness or depression, and many people find connecting to the outdoors more suited than traditional day centre activities. Set within large grounds near easy walks, there are a variety of activities on offer. This might be walking the dog Doris, a miniature schnauzer, with the added bonus of walking up an appetite. Feeding the chickens and collecting eggs is particularly useful to encourage eating which can be an issue for many. Vegetable gardening in raised trugs, collecting flowers and foliage to arrange and tending to seedlings can all be part of the day. There is a repair shed to tackle small projects and mend things or have cup of tea out of the rain with the resident cat. The key is meaningful activity that all stems from a clients interests.
ADVICE
People want the best for their relative but quite often don’t know where to search or what options are available. Working with families as early as possible allows us to be proactive.
Living with someone with dementia can be a battle to discover what works best. The advice we give is professional and based on experience and knowledge.
ON-GOING SUPPORT
The main principle of excellence in dementia care is a completely personalised approach.
Needs change and through planning and on-going assessment, potential issues can be pre-empted. These can include:
Making alterations to improve living at home.
Working with GPs and other medical professionals.
High levels of extra care including keeping an eye on medication and repeat prescriptions; eating and drinking well and by constantly reviewing daily routines, changes get noticed and acted upon quickly.
On-going assessment gives enough time to recruit the right carer to fit the personalities and needs involved.
Regular reporting and advice to family members when required.
